To know the right fit, you have to measure the circumference (not width) of your wrist, like so:

Don't ask me why circumference is in inches, while watch cases are measured mm. That's a whole other discussion and if I had my way, it's metric all the way (allows for smaller, more accurate measurements).
Basically, if you have a small wrist don't get a watch diameter of more than 38mm. Average sized wrist not more than 40-42mm. Personally, at 45mm and higher, it's going to look a bit chunky unless you're built like Dwayne Johnson IMHO.
